In 1924, a handful of Maple Heights high school students landed a "swell" after-school job— keeping the new Maple Heights Library open two afternoons a week. This "book station," with fewer than 800 books, was located in the old Maple Heights High School on Broadway Avenue.

The town's need for library services grew steadily, and in 1928 the little library became an official branch of Cuyahoga County Public Library. Maple Heights Library occupied a variety of school facilities until after World War II. Its patriotic librarians, by the way, resigned to join the WAVES and SPARS, the women's branches of the Navy and Coast Guard.

With the post-war population boom and its central location among the southeast suburbs, Maple Heights successfully lobbied for a regional library, one that would be a hub for smaller libraries in the area. In 1951, the Maple Heights Regional Branch Library opened in the former Ohio Bell Telephone Exchange building on Libby Road, becoming the first regional library in the system.

The library's current building opened in 1978. An example of library-city cooperation, it also houses the Maple Heights Civic Center. The building was thoroughly remodeled and modernized in 1998.

About Our Branch

The Maple Heights Regional Library has a collection of over 200,000 items. The collection specializes in business, law, education, religion, philosophy and sociology and also has materials for adult new readers and their tutors. The children's area has an extensive folk/fairy tale collection and a large castle in which a vast selection of picture books are shelved.

Annexed to the building are the Civic Center, which has a large auditorium, and two meeting rooms that non-profit organizations may request to use. An electronic classroom is also part of this center and hosts free classes for the public covering many subjects such as the Internet, Online Catalog, and Electronic Resources for both adults and children.

InfoPlace is also located here and offers free assistance to adults in making career choices.
Free delivery of library materials can be made to patrons in Maple Heights and the surrounding communities who are unable to visit the library due to a medical condition. Materials are also sent to institutions such as senior centers and nursing homes.

We offer many other programs such as "how to start a business" for our adult patrons and regularly scheduled story times for our youngest patrons. The library also has Internet computers for free public use and personal computers that can be reserved for word processing and other projects.
